The
Indians often illustrated their history in ledger books,
the type used to keep accounting records and journals. Their
drawings, done with colored pencils, trade inks and crayons,
depicted important events in their lives - battles, hunts
and ceremonies. The drawings were done in a flat, pictographic
style with little or no use of perspective. Early drawings
were very simple, featuring stick figures. Later, a more
detailed style illustrating clothing, ornamentation and
weapons was developed.
